My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less

Mote

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
No merit of my own I claim
But wholly lean on Jesus' name
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand

Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath.” But others said, “How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?” And they were divided.
— John 9:16

Have you ever had a chair break a leg? Have you ever tried to stand on one leg for 40 days? How about one full day? An hour? Five minutes?

The Pharisees liked standing on their own. In questioning the blind man, they thought their faith was sure. They thought they were standing on something solid. Their days of standing on one leg were coming to an end.

My friends, whether all is good today for you, or you are feeling lost and forsaken, what do you base your faith on? How solid is your faith? Can you stand on your faith for these 40 days of Lent, a day, an hour, five minutes? An eternity? Yes, you can! Could your hope and faith be built on anything less than the One who overcomes all that overwhelms? The answer is a bold and profound: No!

In the midst of our most challenging times, there is power in knowing we are not alone. I am blessed and give thanks to God for the gift of each of you, and for the gift of your faith. Trusting each of you, one another, and the faith the Lord provides, gives so much more than a strong leg to stand on. Together, we can stand on Christ alone!

When you find yourself longing for a sure thing, lean on the One we can lean on, the One who will stand firm on our behalf, the One who will stand firm for each of us for as long as needed, the One who stands strong now and forever for one and all! Thanks be to God, our real and true and faithful hope is built on nothing less!

Let us pray: Lord, I often build my faith on things other than you, and it breaks down. I cannot stand on my own for even a few minutes. I need you. Free me from trying to stand on what will never hold up. Call me in grace to stand on you. Increase my faith this Lenten season, always, to stand firm anew, all my life, and for all eternity, on You. In your name I pray, for my hope is built on nothing less. Amen.
