Be still, and know that I am God!
— Psalm 46:10

What makes you afraid? We all have fears. Some people are able to say they "fear nothing." Do you ever wonder what it is they are really afraid of?

For each of us, there are so many times, when; fears, anxiety, stress, worry, concern, uncertainty can easily be triggered, heightened, escalated, consuming, draining, exhausting, overwhelming.

Contrary to those on the list of common phobias, contrary to poor Charlie Brown at Lucy's 5-cent counter admitting the "fear of everything," a common fear of ours even as God's people is the fear of not being loved, not being loved just as we are, for who we are.

For those of you facing new fears these days - health, despair, loneliness, financial, grief - you are in my prayers. Trust anew the One who proclaims, "Fear not, for I am with you."

For each of us, in times when we wonder in fear, let us hold fast to the words of the psalmist, let us be renewed, let us call on the power of The Almighty, let us be still and know anew and call on anew and trust anew the One who is our God!

As Jesus from the cross, in the midst of his own pain saw his mother and the disciple he loved and their need for compassion, as he could see their fear and despair and loneliness, and gave them to each other; let us in our days of despair and searching and loneliness and searching, see anew the One who sees us first and gives us to each other.  Let us then, be still and know anew our God; let us be still, and fear not!

Let us pray: Lord, it is not easy to sing out with confidence, "Fear Not!" I know you are with me, but I still can easily feel afraid, lost and alone. Calm and comfort me in the midst of so many questions and unknowns; in the midst of so much that triggers anxiety and worry and fear. Surround me, lift me, save me! Hope is real in the One who overcomes all that overwhelms!  By your Spirit, I will be still, and know anew that you are God. By your Spirit, I will behold the One who beholds me first, and connects me to others; and then I will behold the grace in these seven, simple, renewing, powerful words: "Fear not, for I am with you!" Amen.
