“Seven Words: Simple, Powerful, Renewing Words in Grace Alone”
Come to the Water
Foley
And Jesus said
Come to the water
Stand by my side
I know you are thirsty
You won't be denied
I felt every teardrop
When in darkness you cried
And I long to remind you
That for those tears I died
You said you'd come and
Share all my sorrows
You said you'd be there
For all my tomorrows
I came so close to
Sending you away
But just like you promised
You came here to stay
I just had to pray
“The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.” ”
When you are thirsty, what is best at quenching that thirst?
What do you and your spirit thirst for? Acceptance. Truth. Forgiveness. Healing. Hope. Conviction. Commitment. Strength. Courage. Justice. Freedom. Change. Mission. Drive. Community. Self. Mercy. Grace.
The woman at the well came thirsty for water. She thought she knew what she was thirsty for, and she thought she knew what would quench that thirst. When Jesus spoke to her, and started revealing to her all he knew about her, all he knew about truth and new life and grace; when she knew who was speaking to her, who was beholding her, really looking at her, seeing her, her mouth started to water for so much more. The woman began then to behold the inviting word to come to this water, this life-giving water, and that this water would quench her every thirst.
Behold anew, one and all, the One who beholds you! Whatever you are thirsty for, behold, come to this water, come to this Savior, for he has plenty of powerful and renewing water, plenty of life-giving water, and even more grace!
Let us pray: Lord today I tell you I so often thirst for things of this world. Quench my thirst for that which matters most, for all that which the body and the heart and the spirit are thirsty for. Today, behold, by your Spirit, I take notice, I thank you and praise you. Behold, you thirst for me, and that thirst is not satisfied until by your grace in the cross you have me. Call me to come to the water, your water, to truly behold you alone, give me faith to drink and drink and drink, and never be thirsty again. In your name my thirst is satisfied as I pray. Amen.
