“A Behold to Behold”

God, Whose Almighty Word

Marriott

God whose almighty word
Chaos and darkness heard
And took their flight
Hear us we humbly pray
And where the Gospel day
Sheds not its glorious ray
Let there be light!

A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”
— John 4:7

Have you ever been in a situation where you were "waiting to get word"? Maybe you were waiting to get word about a new baby's birth, or to get word from a doctor's report, or to get word from the bank, or to get word from a friend regarding the timing of a get-together, or to get word on a promotion.

Waiting to get word, can leave us anxious, uneasy.

The woman came to the well not expecting a word, from anyone, and yet Jesus speaks.

At the foot of the cross, Jesus' mother is anxious, Jesus' friends are uneasy, and Jesus speaks, seven simple powerful words: "Woman, behold, your son. Behold, your mother."

As the third week of Lent begins, "behold, look, see," who comes and speaks to you. When you are anxious, uneasy, waiting, when you least expect a word of hope or power to come your way, trust God's almighty Word will be spoken in your midst, and let there be light!

Let us pray: Lord, even when I am anxious and uneasy, even when I am waiting for a powerful, renewing word from you, I often look and listen elsewhere. Help me through your grace to "behold," to look to your Word first, to listen to you, to wait for your Word. In your name I pray, trusting your almighty Word. Amen.
