What Wondrous Love Is This

Barber

What wondrous love is this
O my soul O my soul
What wondrous love is this
O my soul
What wondrous love is this
That caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse
For my soul for my soul
To bear the dreadful curse
For my soul

When I was sinking down
Sinking down sinking down
When I was sinking down
Sinking down
When I was sinking down
Beneath God's righteous frown
Christ laid aside his crown
For my soul for my soul
Christ laid aside his crown
For my soul

When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
— John 11:43-44

How do you explain things to others? You go on that exotic trip, and you try to tell someone about the white sandy beach. You travel to a developing country, and you try to tell a friend about the food on the local village menu. You go to a business meeting and later you try to tell others what you heard and who spoke and what motivated you.

Some things we experience in life are difficult to explain or articulate. Whatever you and your loved ones face at times that can feel so difficult to explain, compare, understand, comprehend, describe, articulate; I pray you are blessed to believe anew the One who called Lazarus to come forth, is the One who is breaking forth for you, to unbind you, too, in ways that give you hope and life anew; in ways you cannot explain!

How are you at explaining for others, "wondrous love"? How do you describe the One who "laid aside his crown"? If a neighbor asked about "your soul" what would you say? How did you answer the last time a friend asked, "Tell me about the resurrection"?  If a colleague at worked wanted to know Who you listen to, Who motivates you, what He says that moves you, saves you, how would you answer?

Some things in life are hard to explain. All things in faith are incomparable! What do we have to compare to wondrous love, the resurrection, the One who laid aside his crown for our soul, to finish so much to begin much more, to call us by name out of our darkness, to unbind us and let us go, to save our soul? Nothing! In times when words are hard to come by, trust the indescribable Holy Spirit speaks through you, oh, my soul!

Let us pray: Jesus, speak again to me and through me, your power and grace. Call my name, unbind me and let me go. I praise you for your incomparable wondrous love. Send your Holy Spirit and my soul will speak again during Holy Week to tell others all that was once unexplainable has been revealed in You, the One who laid aside his crown for my soul. By your grace alone, I speak, and pray. Amen.
