One Bread, One Body

Foley

One bread one body
One Lord of all
One cup of blessing
Which we bless
And we though many
Throughout the earth
We are one body
In this one Lord

The tempter came and said to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
— Matthew 4:3-4

What are you hungry for today? What would satisfy you?

Our bodies need nourishment every day. Our bodies have daily needs, hungers and cravings. Have you ever noticed how sometimes when you are really hungry, you grab the first thing you see? Experience would tell us this does not always satisfy us.

Satan could see how hungry Jesus was in the wilderness. Satan thought he could tempt Jesus with that which was right in front of him, with that which would quickly satisfy him.

God in Christ hungered and had a craving for what would satisfy the body and the soul on a far deeper level. God in Christ, crucified and risen, reveals to us and blesses us with the one bread, the one cup, the one body, the Word that comes from the mouth of God, all that satisfies the hunger throughout the earth; that we are one with the One, we are one with our One Lord!

Let us pray: Lord, you know I often have a wide range of hungers and cravings. You, and you alone, are at the core of what I hunger. You, and you alone, satisfy. Take the empty stones I carry in my life, and make my cravings real. By your Spirit, help me first feast on you and your Word to fill, sustain, and satisfy me, for you alone bless me and all the earth with the simple renewing power of one bread, one cup, one body, in you, our one Lord. In your grace I am filled and satisfied, as I pray. Amen.
