On Jordan’s Banks The Baptist’s Cry
Coffin
On Jordan's banks the Baptist's cry
Announces that the Lord is nigh
Awake and hearken for he brings
Glad tidings of the King of kings
“In those days, John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.””
Do you recall that favorite game of children, when you tell them you are thinking of something in the room, or that you have hidden something in the room, and to help them locate the item, as they walk about looking around, you utter those simple helpful words, "hot," "cold"?
Do you believe that when it comes to Christmas, when it comes to giving up true confession, when it comes to asking the Spirit to help us repent, when it comes to hope, when it comes to Christ's promised return, when it comes to grace coming down, when it comes to comfort and joy, we are getting hotter and hotter every day? Do you truly believe the kingdom of heaven has come near, and is coming closer and closer every day? That is the gift of Advent and Christmas!
"The kingdom of heaven has come near." "Announces that the Lord is nigh." No matter how prepared or unprepared we can feel this time of year, God is coming nearer and nearer to us. Get ready for new tidings of comfort and joy in His grace!
Let us pray: God who is so close, I do not always believe you are near; how close your comfort and joy are to me in Jesus. As your Kingdom comes nearer and nearer, make me safe and secure, even in the midst of all I must confess and repent. Come near to me. Draw me close. Turn my spirit to you, and make me ready for your comfort and joy. Amen.
