Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains.
— James 5:7

Do you like to fish? Do you like to bake fresh bread? Do you like to watch paint dry? How do you feel about farming? What do all four of these have in common? Waiting and watching and patience!

Patience this time of year can be hard to come by. Who likes being patient, waiting in traffic, waiting in check out lines, waiting for people to treat each other with respect, comfort, and joy?

Who likes being patient; waiting for gift giving, for joy to be shared, for the peace and stillness of a silent night?

Who likes being patient waiting for Christ to return? Who likes being patient waiting for Good News of the greatest joy?

In this season of hustle and bustle, trust the God that James writes about is your God. God will grant patience. Like the farmer, we know the gift and promise and life and grace of waiting for the early rains, for we have seen grace fulfilled in Jesus. Now we wait for the late rains, the second coming of Christ, to break forth and usher in the harvest.

While we wait, we know the Good News keeps us strong and focused and courageous and faithful and patient. Thanks to all fulfilled in The Christ, we live each day in the giving of The Gift; we live each day in The Joy that has been shared; we live each day in The Peace of God's silent night!

Let us pray: Great and patient God, I can struggle with trying to be patient. I do not like to wait in lines. I do not like to wait for comfort and joy. I do not like waiting for you, or, for your promised return. Thank you for the strength and presence of your Holy Spirit which helps me live daily in the Good News while I wait patiently and securely in your promised Word. Amen.
