God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

Author Unknown

God rest ye merry gentlemen let nothing you dismay
Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's pow'r when we were gone astray
O - tidings of comfort and joy comfort and joy
O - tidings of comfort and joy

Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
— Matthew 24:42

Our Advent theme brings together, "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" and God's good news to all people! The angel brought these tidings of comfort and joy to the shepherds, "Be not afraid ... I bring good news of great joy..." O, how we long for comfort! O, how we long for joy!

Advent assures us the promise will be fulfilled; Christ will come again; all God's people will rest and rejoice; comfort and joy will be complete! Christmas gives comfort and joy! The Messiah promised, came, God with us!

May God's grace and the Holy Spirit keep us awake while we wait for Jesus to return, and this Advent season, too, to see, to experience, to be filled with comfort and joy!

Let us pray: God who is with us, reveal your power and presence this Advent season. Arrive in our hearts and daily lives. As we wait for your promised return, be with us in our need, in our brokenness, in our emptiness, in our longing for comfort and joy. Amen.
