Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him.
— Genesis 12:1-4a

Spring cleaning is right around the corner - right around that corner, and that corner and that corner. So much needs so much going through. To help clean things out and clear things out, we may wish to answer two simple questions as we come upon items we have not used in some time:  1) What is the purpose of this item?  2) Has this item outlived its purpose, is it still of value?

Abram was 99 years old when God blessed him to be a blessing. God was not about to clean out or to clear out Abram. Abram was being called to a new purpose and he was still of great value to The Lord.

As we continue our Lenten journey, as we trust God has a defined purpose for us and places great value on us, we may still find it easy for us to ask: What value, what purpose, does the Lord have in our lives? As we see we do not have room for everything, we might ask: What is the purpose, the value, of making God and our neighbors first?

In God's grace alone, let us make spring cleaning simple, throwing out what has no value, making more room for Jesus. God's purpose and value could be debated as it has been over the centuries, but what does our heart, our first reaction, say? Perhaps today's simple song gives the most complete answer: God's purpose and value are in loving us, forgiving us, blessing us, and being good, being good all the time, in grace alone!

Let us pray: Jesus, I need to trust you have a purpose for me, that you value me. Keep cleaning up my life and clearing out the things that have no value or purpose. In your grace alone, reveal to me your purpose, put me to use, make me alive and anew. If I ever wonder what purpose you have in my life, once again love me, forgive me, bless me, and surround me with your goodness and grace. In Jesus' name alone, I pray. Amen.
