Song to Walk Anew in Grace

I Want Jesus to Walk With Me

African American Spiritual

vs. 1
I want Jesus
To walk with me
I want Jesus
To walk with me
All along my
Pilgrim journey
Lord I want Jesus
To walk with me

Gathering & Reflection

Psalm 51:1-4

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in your sight so that you are justified in judging me and condemning me.

Hope Announced

Psalm 103:8-12

The Lord is merciful and gracious; slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor avenge us according to our iniquities. For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.

Confession Invited

Psalm 51:9-12

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Song to Walk Anew in Grace

I Want Jesus to Walk With Me

African American Spiritual

vs. 3
In my trials
Lord walk with me
In my trials
Lord walk with me
When my heart is
Almost breaking
Lord I want Jesus
To walk with me

Assurance of Forgiveness & Grace

Psalm 130:1-8

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord! Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness in you, and you should be feared.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plenteous redemption, for God will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

I Want Jesus to Walk With Me

African American Spiritual

vs. 2
When I’m in trouble
Lord walk with me
When I’m in trouble
Lord walk with me
When my head is
Bowed in sorrow
Lord I want Jesus
To walk with me

Jesus, Remember Me

Berthier

  Jesus remember me
When you come into your kingdom
Jesus remember me
When you come into your kingdom

(repeat as led)

Almighty, ever-living God, you hate nothing you have made, you forgive the sins of all who ask for forgiveness, and you pray for our hearts and our faith to be renewed. Create in us new and honest hearts, so, truly repenting of our sins, we may each return to you with all our heart. Help us live anew in your gift of baptism, and strengthen us in discipleship and purpose and passion. By your Holy Spirit this Lenten season bless us by your grace, to listen to your every simple, powerful, renewing word, to trust anew The One who forever faithfully has his heart on us.  In the grace of Christ alone, we pray.  Amen.

Old Testament Lesson

Joel 2:12-19

Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and he relents from punishing. Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord, your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a solemn assembly; gather the people. Sanctify the congregation; assemble the aged; gather the children, even infants at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her canopy. Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep. Let them say, “Spare your people, O Lord, and do not make your heritage a mockery, a byword among the nations.” Why should it be said among the peoples, “Where is their God?” Then the Lord became jealous for his land, and had pity on his people. In response to his people the Lord said: “I am sending you grain, wine, and oil, and you will be satisfied; and I will no more make you a mockery among the nations.”

(New Revised Standard Version)

New Testament Lesson

2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:2

We entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.” See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!

(New Revised Standard Version)

In Preparation to Hear The Word

Psalm 105:4-8

Pastor:
Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his presence continually!

Women:
Remember the wonderful works the Lord has done, his miracles, and the judgments.

Men:
Offspring of Abraham his servant, his chosen ones, he is the Lord our God!

All:
The Lord is mindful of his covenant forever, of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations!

Gospel

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21

And Jesus said, “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. ... And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

(New Revised Standard Version)

Stating Our Faith After Hearing The Word

Psalm 116:1-11

I love the Lord because he has heard my voice
and my supplications.
Because he inclined his ear to me,
Therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
The snares of death encompassed me;
The pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish.
Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“O Lord, I beseech thee, save my life!”
Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful.
The Lord preserves the simple;
When I was brought low, he saved me.
Return, O my soul, to your rest;
For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.
For you have delivered my soul from death,
My eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling;
I walk before the Lord in the land of the living. I kept my faith,
Even when I said, “I am greatly afflicted”;
Even when I said in fear, “No one can be trusted.” Amen.

Prayerful Words From Long Ago, For Today,

Psalm 142:1-7

(Including sung response, “The Spirit Intercedes For Us” by Olson)

 All Sing:
The Spirit intercedes for us
With sighs too deep
For words to express
Oh oh oh

I cry with my voice to the Lord, with my voice I make supplication to the Lord.

I pour out my complaint before him, I tell my trouble before him.

When my spirit is faint, you know my way.

In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me.  I look to the right and watch, but there is none who takes notice of me; no refuge remains to me, no one cares for me.

I cry to you, O Lord; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living. Give heed to my cry; for I am brought very low!”

Deliver me from my persecutors; for they are too strong for me! Bring me out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name.

The righteous will surround me; for you will deal bountifully with me. Amen.

All Sing:
The Spirit intercedes for us
With sighs too deep
For words to express
Oh oh oh

More Prayerful Words of True Generosity & Grace

Psalm 116:12-19

What shall I render to the Lord for all his bounty to me?

I pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

I lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

O Lord, I am your servant; I am your servant, the child of your handmaid. You have loosed my bonds.

I offer you the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on your name.

I pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.

In the courts of the house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem. Praise the Lord!

All Sing:
The Spirit intercedes for us
With sighs too deep
For words to express
Oh oh oh

Holy Communion will take place during our service. If you are not worshipping with us in person but would like to receive Communion, we will be offering Drive Through Communion at our building at 16200 Dodd Lane, Lakeville, Minnesota, following our indoor service. Drive Through Communion will be available between 10:15am & 10:30am.

For those worshiping with us in person, we receive communion through intinction; that is, you will receive the bread, the host, then dip into the glass of choice, either a red wine in the chalice closest to the host, or in a light colored non-alcoholic grape juice. All are welcome.

We also offer gluten free and pre-packaged options. Please take these options before arriving at the host to receive a blessing.

Eucharistic Prayer & Words of Institution

Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth. In mercy for our fallen world you gave your only Son, that all those who believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. We give thanks to you for the salvation you have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may receive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in his holy supper.

Amen. Come and fill us, come and speak to us, come and save us, Jesus, by your grace.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord and Savior, Jesus, took bread and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever. Amen.

Songs During Holy Communion

Just As I Am, I Come Broken

Cottrell

vs. 1
Just as I am
Without one plea
But that thy blood
Was shed for me
And that thou bidd’st me
Come to thee
O Lamb of God I come
I come

vs. 2
Just as I am
And waiting not
To rid my soul
Of one dark blot
To thee whose blood
Can cleanse each spot
O Lamb of God I come
I come

refrain:
I come broken to be mended
I come wounded to be healed
I come desperate to be rescued
I come empty to be filled
I come guilty to be pardoned
By the blood of Christ the Lamb
And I’m welcomed with open arms
Praise God just as I am

vs. 3
Just as I am
I would be lost
But mercy and grace
My freedom bought
And now to glory
In your cross
O Lamb of God I come
I come

(refrain)

Strengthened to Live Today, and All Our Days, In The Grace of Christ

The body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, strengthen you and keep you in his grace, this night, and on into life everlasting.
Amen.

Let us pray.
Almighty God, you gave your Son both as a sacrifice for sin and a model of the godly life. Enable us to receive him always with thanksgiving, and to conform our lives and our hearts to his, through Jesus Christ, the Lord of life. Amen.

Strengthened to Live Anew In Hope & Grace

Psalm 31:1-5

In you, O Lord, do I seek refuge; let me never be put to shame;
In your righteousness deliver me!
Incline your ear to me, rescue me speedily!
Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!
You are my rock and my fortress;
For your name’s sake lead me and guide me,
For you are my refuge.
Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me,
O Lord, faithful God.

Friends, return to The Lord your God with all your heart; trust and live anew in the simple real power of God’s every Word, and God’s saving grace alone in Jesus Christ! The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor, and give you his peace, thanks to the One who forever keeps his heart on you. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Going Anew in Spirit & Grace

Grace Alone

Nelson & Brown

Ev’ry promise we can make
Ev’ry prayer and step of faith
Ev’ry diff’rence we will make
Is only by His grace
Ev’ry mountain we will climb
Ev’ry ray of hope we shine
Ev’ry blessing left behind
Is only by His grace

Grace alone
Which God supplies
Strength unknown
He will provide
Christ in us
Our Cornerstone
We will go forth
In grace alone

We will go forth
In grace alone

Two foci in tension during Lent are sin and baptism. We are invited, beckoned, welcomed, blessed to return to The Lord with all our heart.  In the grace of Christ alone, we see and believe anew, even when we sin, The One who created us, who washes us in baptism, is tireless in coming to us, speaking to us, saving us, gracing us, keeping our hearts, on The One who forever keeps His heart on us!

The use or reference to ashes on this day, acts as a bridge between the guilt of sin, and the grace of baptism. Ashes were once a cleansing agent, and also used as a visible penitential remembrance of baptism. The connecting imagery here is, while water can drown out life, water also gives fresh life; and while ashes are dirty they also serve as an abrasive which cleanses.

In the 9th century, the imposition of ashes was used to mark those penitents temporarily excommunicated during the expulsion of Penitents, the original emphasis of Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday’s emphasis on sin also connects our understanding of it as a Day of Atonement to its similarity and historical development out of the Jewish Day of Atonement. With the day’s focus on penitence, ‘sin’ must not go unaddressed. Sin is most clear when we take an honest look at our heart and our treasure; when we look closely at who is The One we worship, The One who even now comes and speaks to us; simple, powerful, renewing words, in grace alone! Sin for us as God’s people is “that which leads our hearts away from the love of God and the love for neighbor.”

As we reflect on our sin, God graces us, blesses us, to trust our hope and new life in baptism. A simple translation for “Lent” is “spring.” Lent is God’s grace, springing forth new life out of sin, for our hope in baptism is empty without the death and the resurrection of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Trusting God forever keeps His heart on us, gracing us with rebirth in baptism, is central to our Lenten journey. In preparing for Easter, we prepare even more for the mysteries of redemption from sin, everlasting life, salvation, hope, and life anew each and every day in the grace of the One who forever keeps His heart on us!
